In a survey from August of last year, 51% of automobile owners responded that they should change their oil every 3,000 miles. However, according to Steve Mazor, manager of the Auto Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center, “the 3,000-mile oil change just says that the marketing campaign by quick-lube companies has been effective.”
Improvement in the quality of oils, fuels and automotive lubricants as well as advances in car engines have typically lengthened the suggested oil-change interval to 7,500 miles – 10,000 miles according to most automobile manufacturers.
A recent article in the LA Times says the issue in California has caused officials to start a campaign discouraging drivers from getting their oil changed too often, causing excessive oil waste.
