Did you know that in almost every major US city, gasoline blends change during the summer according to specifications mandated by the EPA? In fact, there are at least 16 different "boutique blends" in production every summer and over 40 different blends of gasoline products sold in the US. That means the same pipeline that delivers a blend specified for Chicago, must send a different product to Detroit, and non-reformulated products to other, surrounding areas! That's one reason why gasoline prices spike during the summer.
