The bullets back in the day tended to come apart at the fast velocity of the little savage.

Though it required a relatively small 87 grain bullet to reach this speed, it was still quite an accomplishment. It cannot be denied, however, that the petite Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight rifle offered in .25 WSSM is a very cute hunting rifle.

Older rifles and even some newer … [2], Charles Newton designed the 250-3000 Savage case to fit the popular Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle. .25-06 factory loads drive a 120 grain spitzer bullet to a MV of 2940 fps with ME of 2382 ft. lbs.

Reloading cartridges for the 250 Savage can push this to 300 yards in modern rifles.

That was an 87 grain spitzer bullet and it was fine for varmints, but a little light for deer. The .257 Weatherby Magnum is the Queen of the .25 caliber cartridges. New 10' twist guns no problem with anything. Suggestions?

I had a beautiful deluxe grade model 99 that I still regret letting go of many years ago.

Don’t think you could do that these days. I have owned maybe 10 rifles chambered for the .250 Savage, one an original takedown 1899 Savage that simply would not shoot any 100-grain bullet well, and even some 85- to 90-grain bullets. It was designed to be used in the Savage Model 99 hammerless lever action rifle. The name comes from its original manufacturer, Savage Arms, and the fact that the original load achieved a 3,000 ft/s (910 m/s) velocity with an 87 grain (5.6 g) bullet. Performance is very close to the .257 Roberts. I own three 250's currently. John took this big mule deer doe in Montana's Missouri Breaks with one shot from a Winchester Model 70.250 Savage and a handoad using the 100-grain Speer Hot-Cor. bullets at 2800 f.p.s. With 120 grain factory loads the .25-06 is suitable for all species of North American deer, antelope, sheep, and goats to over 400 yards. For those that reload their own shells the 250 Savage can efficiently be used for both deer and varmint hunting also. Speed does kill with a good bullet.

Marlin and Winchester should re-introduce the .25-35 in their popular Model 94 and Model 336 lever action rifles.

I would say more than adequate for small plains antelope. All rights reserved.

Most of the following .25 cartridges are covered in greater detail in my series of articles on individual rifle cartridges. Author: John Barsness / Wolfe Publishing Co. You must be a subscriber to see the full article. The .257's advantage over the similar .24 caliber cartridges is its ability to handle heavier bullets, and the .257 Roberts is factory loaded with 117-120 grain bullets.

And very few one-in-14-inch twist .250s will stabilize a 100-grain Barnes Triple- Shock.

The first group thought the .250-3000 worthless for big game hunting, and the second used it on elk. Arthur Savage, founder of the Savage Arms company, wasn't so sure about the idea and believed a 100 grain bullet would be more suitable for deer.

I’ve always been enamoured withe 25 caliber from the 25-20 to the mighty 257 Weatherby. No less an authority than Jack O'Connor held that the .257 Roberts was a better, more versatile cartridge than the newer .243 Winchester and 6mm Remington.

( Log Out /  Hornady SP. Like the other WSSM cartridges, the .25 WSSM is not a true magnum at all. mbogo45 wrote on Jager Waffen74's profile. It may not display this or other websites correctly. As originally factory loaded, the .250 Savage drove an 87 grain spitzer bullet to 3000 fps.

Aside from boat tail bases, some have plastic tips. Unfortunately it never got to kill a deer.

from the Remington.250 Sav. bullets mirrors the velocity of the.243 Win. Varmint and predator shooters can handload 75 grain bullets at about 3200-3300 fps or 85-87 grain bullets at about 3000 fps.

The.250 is a compact and economical cartridge whose modern appearance belies its age. Is the 250 Savage adequate on the smaller plains game species (Impala, Blesbok, etc)? The .250 Savage was and is a great little round for whitetail. You are using an out of date browser. The recoil energy from this load in a 7.5 pound rifle is only 8.6 ft. lbs. On the other hand, using 75-87 grain bullets, the .25-06 is a better varmint cartridge than the .270.

Controversy crackled around the .250 Savage for many years after its introduction. It can be found in the "Rifle Cartridges" section of Guns and Shooting Online. The .25-35 Winchester is a light recoiling lever action rifle cartridge suitable for small deer and antelope out to about 200 yards, and medium size deer to about 100 yards.

But the rub is that the .243 Winchester and 6mm Remington are loaded to substantially higher pressure than the .257 Roberts, which is held to a rather mild 45,000 cup or 54,000 piezo psi. The .250 Savage entered life as the .250-3000 Savage. This really had no bearing on how well the .250 killed anything, but somehow the hunting public has always had the perception that a 100-grain bullet is the minimum required to cleanly kill deer.

The popular bullet weights available to reloaders in .25 caliber include 60 grain, 75 grain, 85-87 grain, 90 grain, 100 grain, 115-117 grain, and 120 grain. The 115-gr. Ditto the .264 Winchester Magnum and 6.5x68. The.250 Savage was introduced by Savage in 1915. I'll be taking my 8mm Rem Mag as my primary rifle, but am considering a Ruger No. The .25's being factory loaded at this time include the old .25-20 Winchester rifle/revolver combination cartridge, the useful but obsolescent .25-35 Winchester lever action rifle cartridge, the .250-3000 Savage (now also obsolescent), The .257 Roberts, .25-06 Remington, and spectacular .257 Weatherby Magnum.

Appreciate your info and feedback, I looked at some European websites to try and get info on the value of this particular Steyr. I cannot think of much better a cartridge for light plains game than the 250 Sav.

I use a 100 grain Sierra Pro Hunter and 4320 powder.......two grains more in the bolt. [3], Currently there are very few new firearms being made in .250 Savage.

The 250 Savage chambered in the great Savage 99 is one of the best deer guns ever made.

Many older .250 Savages with one in- 14-inch twists won’t stabilize, say, an 85-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, when they will stabilize a very short 87-grain spitzers such as the Speer Hot-Cor (the heaviest spitzers that shot well in that one-in-15-inch twist rifle I owned).

All this affects how the cartridges should be handloaded. In addition, many bullets are much longer for their weight than they used to be.

With the powders of the day, the heaviest spitzers bullet that could be pushed to 3,000 fps weighed 87 grains, something that turned out to be both a blessing and a curse.

Sold it to pay for tuition and books in college.
