How far is too far depends on the shooter, the rifle, and the conditions.

What comparison would you like to see?

I was going for the 338 Lapua or a 300 RUM. As a note, Bartlein arguably makes the BEST barrels available. There’s a good reason that the 6.5 Creedmoor is the darling of many long range shooters (and now adopted by SOCOM). For the build, SMR meticulously machined a 26-inch 416R stainless steel threaded barrel with a 1:8” twist, single cut point rifling and a simple-yet-rich bead-blast finish. While APR’s action is by far the best I’ve used in a personal build, they’ve recently made even more improvements in their newly released APR-G2 (second generation) action. We have not been able to test this load yet, but expect muzzle velocities to be near 2950 fps. Cartridge are like breast, different size and shape for everyone taste… Sent it. Standard deviation throughout numerous loads has averaged from 6.1–10.6, as measured through my MagnetoSpeed chronograph. My final round was off. But I’ll stick with the 6.5 PRC for now. He has an engineer’s brain, zero tolerance for defects and an unrelenting passion for all things precision shooting. Obviously. However, this comes at a cost. So, once Timney introduced the Calvin Elite for bolt guns, I knew it was the right fit. I see sub-MOA groupings at 2,000 yards in my future and I have no doubt this bolt-gun build and Hornady’s .300 PRC ELD Match ammo can deliver the goods. I would like to say first thanks for your service.i needed the tire data about 300 prc will get vergara b 14 hrm for my first ever elk hunt.ammo in short supply? We are currently using the Defiance Machine action with a .750” bolt diameter (same as the 338 Lapua) with a .545” bolt face (standard magnum), feeding from an Accuracy International CIP magazine. It means the Alamo Precision action I included in this build is unquestionably top shelf.More than a fancy, spiral-fluted bolt, the APR action was machined to exacting tolerances seldom found even at top levels of industry manufacturing. Can this be made to work with an extended magazine box? Even world-class precision shooter and premium chassis maker Scott McRee, owner of McRees Precision, said, “Hornady’s ammo is dang near making reloading obsolete.” That's quite a compliment from a respected marksman of his caliber. However, the amount of butt-hurt I get over displaying actual data is entertaining to me. The 300 PRC is effectively a name brand for the 30-375R cartridge. By the way, the Seekins is not a custom but a factory produced rifle. Here’s some data on a 225 grain Berger Hybrid bullet traveling 2900 fps out of the 300 PRC: I shot 6.9 Mils up from my 100 yard zero for this 1,000 yard group from my Barrett MRAD (it’s a phenomenal rifle see our MRAD review): So, why get a new caliber for essentially a few percentage points better performance than the 300 Win Mag? For this project, I leaned pretty heavily on SMR’s expert advice. This provides some great advantages – good enough to make me an absolute fan of the 300 Precision Rifle Cartridge. Wow, Carl. “Impact. Mag. Aren’t there enough 30 caliber magnum rounds already? “Impact, left side, 8 o’clock, about 12 inches off center-mass.”, I dialed .2 mils right.

Sorry…I put G2 instead of G7….distracted doing other things. shoot a freakin missile and be done with it! So stop being butthurt if your caliber that you plug in your ass is not being given a proper recognition.

Hey Ryan, Thanks for the great article!

To compare one 30 cal cartridge to another 30 cal cartridge for external ballistics purposes, use the exact same bullet loaded to similar % of max pressures.

Sgt. This one left me VERY confused.

The .300 PRC is designed around a 225-grain bullet that enabled Hornady to keep as much projectile as possible out of the case.

I think that if I did the same weight folks would complain and if I did different weights folks are clearly complaining. I agree with Ryan and the military, I AINT packing the 50 bmg around all day. After all, there’s always a new cartridge coming out that promises to do what no other cartridge has done before. Great article, a few good replies, and a lot of dumb ones. As a hunting cartridge, it is still at the top of our list.

However I’m looking to try and start off with a decent rifle I could grow better at the sport with for many years to come. The 300 Winchester Magnum is still our most popular chambering for North American Game short of Brown Bear. Looks like close to the 30 Boo-Boo too, for those who remember the great hours of this now obscure round ^^.

Coming into the .300 PRC project early in January was difficult at best. Each action passes through an unrelenting quality-assurance checklist with lower limits well beyond what is considered industry standard. Hornady has two loads on the market for the .300 PRC: a 225-grain ELD Match load at a muzzle velocity of 2810 fps and a 212-grain ELD X hunting load at a muzzle velocity of 2860 fps; this pair will handle both long-range target shooting and hunting duties for all game up to brown bear, Cape buffalo, hippopotamus and elephant. I would suggest running the same test but using 300gr SMK’s or 285gr Eldx in the Lapua. I like guns don’t care what cal they are. That would be like giving your Hyundai and Corvette the same size engine. I liked your article, I found it informative. to call upon for more 2K impacts. At the end of the day—in reality a couple of weeks—social media turned up a savior in Team POI President Cole Quarnberg, who orchestrated help from. I bet Ryan can shoot better than most of you people in here!
