If they updated it, there would be no question about the KLX being the bike for me. It's been 2 years since I had the KLX though. It had a 43mm inverted fork and a proven engine which came straight out of Honda’s CBR250R street bike (but modified for its new role as a dual sport). If you ride mx I think the shorter KLX is going to perform worse and you might be better with the WR250F. Has anyone had the fortune to ride both the klx300 and yz250f? Yes I have ridden both so I can compare a bit. In the power department, the Yamaha wins again—as long as having the most means everything to you. There's nothing wrong with an air-cooled bike, but higher-end performance bikes are all liquid-cooled.

Is the klx300 easier to start than the ys250f? The 2018 KLX250, which sells for $5349, took on a few other minor changes besides FI. They could easily take out 8 pounds if they tried. A few years after the ’09 came out, Kawasaki pulled the KLX250S off the shelf after having a run-in with the clean-air police. Heck, Yamaha’s YZ-F MX bikes didn’t even have fuel injection at the time. The KLX300R weighs 282 pounds so it's the heaviest beginner bike, but that's understandable given the larger engine size and larger gas tank (bike weight is calculated 'ready-to-ride', with all fluids added). The Honda holds the most fuel, but not by much. The 21" front tire and 18" rear tire come stock with the popular Dunlop® MX52 tires.
The CRF250L got its first revamp last year. The KLX is shorter wheelbase and probably steeper forks and that hurts it on the faster stuff. In 2020 Kawasaki introduced not just one, but two new adult beginner dirt bikes to their KLX lineup - the KLX230R and the KLX300R. Keeping in mind of course that the WR250F is more of a performance bike so it uses a different, lighter (and more expensive) frame. CN, Liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve, 4-stroke, single, Tubular, steel and aluminum, semi- double cradle. It takes lot more to get the Yamaha’s suspension to bottom out compared to the Honda’s or Kawasaki’s. The KLX300R is 17 pounds heavier than the Honda, and 28 pounds heavier than the Yamaha. A few similarities (and differences) between the bikes will be noted, but this isn't a full-on KLX300R vs. CRF250F vs. WR250F article. In comparison, the KLX250S—the Yamaha’s number-one competitor at the time—sold for about a $1000 less.
It just depends which bike fits your needs and skill level best, really. The WR250F has little low end. The WR250F seat is hard and suspension is harsher to me with a bad back.
The Kawasaki’s is low, as well, but the Yamaha’s is downright high for an entry-level motorcycle at 36.6 inches. It wasn’t until 2013 that Honda responded with its first fuel-injected 250cc dual sport, the CRF250L, and now that Kawasaki has joined the FI ranks with its 2018 KLX250 (the S designation disappeared along with the carburetor), it’s time to revisit these machines once again.
The number-one reason being suspension. But what it really needed was FI. Of the three, however, the Yamaha takes it one step farther for also being a fully capable off-road motorcycle for the more experienced rider. Whatever the difference between these two is negligible. By The Yamaha’s fork and shock also just plainly dampens and feels better than the Honda’s and Kawasaki’s, and overall, the Yamaha has a better and more compliant ride both on and off the pavement than the other two. It just screws in. 46mm USD, cartridge, telescopic fork, fully adj. The KLX has smooth power, not massive but is still pretty reasonable. Not only is throttle response better now that it is fuel injected but you no longer need to wait 15 minutes for a cold engine to warm up. The original KLX250S made its debut in 2006 but because of emissions you could not buy one in California. People also swap out the CV carb on the KLX so it will be more snappy, I never tried that either but I bet it works. 17% more displacement.
Honda also started offering ABS as an option with the ’17 model.

There are a lot of variables. I'm not sure I could keep up with the guy on the WR250F on faster trails, but tight stuff with a bunch of corners I should be set.
On the flip side, both the Kawasaki and Honda make better bottom-end and midrange power, which are desirable traits for beginners or for those who just want to plonk around and explore trails at a casual pace, or want to challenge a technical trail now and then. Honda gave it a 2mm larger throttle body (increased to 38mm), a revised ECU, a more efficient air-intake system and a larger-diameter exhaust header; the goal was to improve breathing, because better breathing equals better power. The KLX300R has the largest engine (292cc) in the beginner bike class and is the only bike that has a DOHC engine. It caught our interest at the time because it was an all-new motorcycle filling a gaping hole in Honda’s dual-sport line of entry-level dirt bikes, it had fuel injection and was dressed up to look a lot like its CRF-R MX brothers. I wish I still had a KLX now that we ride faster, so I could get a better comparison. The KLX has more low end though, thats for sure.

It's great that consumers have more beginner dirt bike choices, and the KLX300R is a good choice for beginning riders who have enough confidence in their riding abilities to handle a bike with more power, or someone who has outgrown a smaller bikes and is ready to step up, without breaking the bank. I have been posting a lot on this topic lately on various forums. I would soften it for sure, but the seat is more difficult to fix. Smooth, precise and predictable low rpm throttle response is critical for riders new to motorcycling, and all three bikes have just that—excellent throttle response.
