As someone just says a little down bellow it IS a very French scent, very Parisian, although it is not the only place in Europe where geranium is a trade mark. If you want to smell clean and nice, this is the ideal fragrance. I don't get the barbershop/shaving cream feeling, not that I mind it at all, I love Guerlain Vetiver Extreme. I was just underwhelmed by the scent and I find it to be rather boring so I sold my bottle. Fragrantica® Trends is a relative value that shows the interest of Fragrantica members in this fragrance over time. And a brilliant fragrance too. I see people waxing nostalgic about this one, which is only natural. The generally affluent Rive Gauche, which was for centuries home to artists, students, and intellectuals, has seen enormous gentrification following World War II and is now considered a rather posh and quiet area. While I think that this is a more mature, distinguished fragrance, you don't have to be of a certain age to enjoy it; though it can certainly make the wearer (even a 12 year old) seem more mature, or distinguished, while wearing. If you can get a vintage bottle treat it like gold because it's a scent of true America at her peak. I love this fragrance for sentimental reasons as well as it's beautiful scent...it reminds me of my grandfather. I even have a bottle of my own (along with rive gauche pour femme) although I cannot wear it when I'm out (would be too strong and manly for a woman) Interestingly, the pour femme version is completely different from this one although it is also an amazing fragrance on its own (it's powdery and musky). It is very clean and comforting. I bought my Saint Laurent Rive Gauche tote this past spring and have already gotten so much wear out of it. It's odd but in a unique, enticing way. If only there were a renewable supply of this. This is a straight 10/10. still interested in trying the reformulated version because i heard it's close to this one. Tom Ford's brilliance was to create a modern evocation of the original women's Rive Gauche, which came in a blue/black/silver spray can. In saying this, it lasts better than I imagined it to. This is how I felt, at first like a purple furry thing it was quite interesting, but then like I had just shaven all my purple furr and it took a huge can of barbasol shaving cream to do it, finally I soaked my head in old spice. My Number One of all fragrances.......................well, so far. Perhaps it is the sweet anis and the cloves that give off a clean surgery like airto RG, I want to avoid the word dentist room. This is a true masterpiece! Now I realize why the vintage is a classic fougere. This may be unpopular here, but I don't like this one at all. Not worth a $40 in my opinion. I'm a 45 yo female & have worn this fragrance for years, long before i fell in love with the female version...which by the way....is a supreme classic aldehydic chypre, & still wear both fragrances today. I opened and hurriedly opened the package, the cellophane had become crispy and yellow. Round, steady, with swag and grace ,elegant. the one in the clear bottle to me imo did suffer a change, that barbershop feel is alot dimmer than the LA collection and the TIN can version. It's been a faithful companion through years. I found a 2.5 oz bottle of the vintage aluminum bottle a few years ago. After many years and hundreds of fragrance encounters, this remains my favourite which I always return to. I just loved this fragrance. At the opening I was a bit turned off by it as there was a strong herbal note but as it settled down over the next ten minutes it dried into a rich creamy scent. Overall it smells nice but its nothing special, just smells like shaving cream without adding anything unique. 30+ on this one. Reminds me of aftershave but done in a appealing way. enjoying the fresh soapy smell and trying to ignore the cloves note, as much as i can :). Thankfully, it smells terrific, very crisp and "blue" on top with heady notes of lavender, rosemary, star anise, and patchouli, and it dries into a fresh, powdered-patchouli/coumarin aura of great distinction. it was, it is and it will be the most unique and masculine perfume of the modern era. I just received this fragrance from an online retailer in the UK (because no shops have it in stock anymore) and I find that it has a really bitter smell at the opening when I spray it on my skin. One of the true 'strong' scents. Rive Gauche pour Homme Yves Saint Laurent for men is simply a majestic scent! I do have both a vintage bottle as well as the newer glass one but still I was excited AF just to be let down. This is just a wonderful fragrance, very French, and quite sweet, reminds me of a hairdressers. Shaving cream. A familiar smell, yes barber shaving foam, but with that bit more. Nice for the office, dressy events, or casual weekends. Hang out at the Left Bank and talk about existentialism and revolution. Eventually I got my hands on some.. Reminiscent of traditional canned shaving foam, the scent was Inspired by YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme (2003) and consists of a Fern base accented by geranium, lavender, oakmoss, patchouli, and a hint of Gaiac wood.". Finally I've got original formula ! this parfume reminds me of Azzaro pour Homme but it's much pleasant.. it's fresh, i can say, manly, elegant.. it was a blind buy but absolutly no regrets.. i like it.
